Paul Daley is one of Australia’s most respected authors and journalists, a sharp thinker, eloquent writer, and all-around brilliant human. When Paul approached me to create his personal website, the goal was clear: he wanted a space that felt elegant, stylish, and crisp, where his diverse body of work could live in one cohesive, beautifully designed home.
The website showcases Paul’s books, and his long-running journalism with The Guardian, and also includes a space for his own reflections, a self-hosted blog where he can publish essays independently of media outlets. The design strikes a careful balance between refined and approachable, letting the content take centre stage without distraction.
From start to finish, I handled strategy, design, and development, tailoring every element to reflect Paul’s tone and presence. The site features custom code for seamless layout transitions, lightweight animations, and subtle styling that enhances the user experience without ever overwhelming it. I also set up an RSS integration that pulls in his Guardian articles automatically, ensuring his latest journalism is always front and centre.
On the technical side, I optimised the site for speed, accessibility, and SEO, ensuring it performs as well as it looks across all devices. It’s a site built for longevity, just like Paul’s writing.
Beyond the project itself, this was one of those collaborations that stays with you. Paul is not only incredibly talented, but also genuinely kind, thoughtful, and passionate about his craft. We bonded over our shared love of dogs and a deep appreciation for meaningful stories. I feel really proud of what we created together and can’t wait to see where his words take him next.
