How Kim E. Anderson AM achieved a more timeless digital presence through a strategic website redesign

Overview

2026 has already been an incredible year for Kim E. Anderson AM. In the 2026 Australia Day Honours, Kim was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for “significant service to literature and to the publishing industry”, an extraordinary and well-deserved recognition of her contribution to Australian publishing and storytelling.

With such a significant milestone in her career, it felt like the right time for her website to evolve alongside her.

The redesign focused on creating a cleaner, more sophisticated online presence that reflected Kim’s current work, voice, and reputation, while also improving the experience for readers navigating the site.

Context

Kim’s original website was created around the release of her debut novel, The Prize. While the site had served its purpose for many years, the design reflected an earlier stage of her career and no longer aligned with who she is as an author today.

The previous website featured bright colours and bold styling that began to feel visually overwhelming and distracted from the content itself. As Kim’s body of work and reputation evolved, the website needed to feel more polished, timeless, and representative of her achievements.

At the same time, Kim had invested in beautiful new photography, and the redesigned website needed to give those images room to breathe and become a defining feature of the visual experience.

Why outdated branding can impact audience connection

For authors in particular, a website is often the first impression that readers, media professionals, event organisers, and publishers will have of their work.

When a design no longer reflects the person behind the brand, it can unintentionally create a disconnect. Overwhelming colours and outdated styling can distract from the writing itself and make it harder for visitors to engage naturally with the content.

The goal wasn’t to completely reinvent Kim’s online presence. It was to refine it, creating a website that felt calm, elegant, contemporary, and aligned with the quality of her work.

Solving the challenge through a cleaner, more strategic redesign

The redesign introduced a much more intentional visual direction. We moved away from the loud visual styling and created a cleaner, smarter, and more timeless experience with improved typography, increased white space, simplified navigation, and a calmer visual hierarchy.

A subtle splash of red was used intentionally throughout the site to maintain warmth and personality without overwhelming the reader's experience.

Behind the scenes, the project also included updated SEO foundations, including:

  • Improved page structure

  • Metadata optimisation

  • Image optimisation

  • Mobile responsiveness

  • Enhanced user experience

  • Cleaner navigation and internal flow

Kim also reinstated her blog as part of the redesign, helping create more opportunities for audience engagement and long-term organic visibility.

How Kim E. Anderson AM achieved stronger engagement through strategic web design

Following the redesign, the website experienced increased overall user engagement and pageviews, with visitors spending more time exploring the site and interacting more deeply with Kim’s content.

The refreshed visual identity positioned Kim in a way that felt polished, professional, and future-focused, while still feeling warm and approachable to readers.

Most importantly, the redesign created a website that finally felt aligned with where Kim is now in her career, not where she was when the original website first launched.
